Located just 50 kilometers northeast of Barcelona, it is also home to the sanctuary and Benedictine Monastery of the same name and is dedicated to the Virgin of Montserrat, popularly known as the Moreneta.

Since the statue of the Moreneta was found here around the year 800, according to legend, Montserrat has been linked with spirituality. In addition to the monastery, the mountain features a large number of small churches and hermitages, many of them abandoned.
